A wide area network, or WAN, is any place that one can connect to the internet through wireless routers. And is so named because the physical area that one can connect could be large building sized. The opposite is a Local Area network, LAN, which is hard wired, and used primarily in gaming competitions and housed in one room.
A good example for a WAN -- wide area network -- is a business or school network, when the GAN, or global area network, is the Internet itself.
