Note that the jobs will vary with each council and with the number of members and the monetary resources the council has.

In the USA at the council level, the council has a board of directors. The Chief Executive Officer is responsible for the day to day operations of the council and for reporting to the board.

Other departments a council may have include Membership (gets people to join, provides training, provides support to the members), Finance (takes care of the finances of the council and also funding, getting donations, coordinating with United Way, etc.), Human Resources (hires, fires staff, handles paperwork related to staff), Program (provides events, activities, training for girls, guidelines for earning awards, camps), Communication (newsletters, program books, Online information, press releases, email, etc.), Product Sales (handles the council's product sales - cookies, nuts, calendars), Council Shop/Retail Operations (stocks the shop and handles the sales), Camp (responsible for the camp facilities).

The jobs become more specific in each department. The Membership department may have a Registrar who handles the registrations for all the events and the membership registrations; a Volunteer Manager/Coordiantor who works to see that the troop leaders/advisers are registered, trained, and following the rules; and the Membership Specialists or Field Directors who work directly with the members.

The Finance Department may have a Grant Coordinator, a person who writes grants for funding for the council.

The Program Department may have Program Instructors who run various programs and events; Gold Award Manager who works with the girls and the Gold Award Committee for approval of Gold Award projects.

Girl Scouts of the USA also have a national office with staff set up similar to the councils, but they work with the councils and with the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) which is the international organization all Girl Scout and Girl Guide organizations belong to.
