The first issue is determining what kind of video you want to use. In general order of use those formats are generally:

Flash

Windows Media

Quicktime

Real Player

Flash is installed on 95% of all computers, used in cell phones and PDA's, and has many delivery options.

Windows Media is generally used as Microsoft has a large following. Unfortunately the compression is limited and when streaming video or streaming live video it can become a bandwidth hog and generally will not work on slower internet connections such as DSL or a shared DSL or cable modem.

Quicktime is simply the Apple standard for video, both web and non-web functions are in the same format. Every single Apple computer comes preloaded with Quicktime and it is a standard installation for the Apple operating system.

Real Player is a downloadable program/plugin that has a proprietary format, but can generally play many other formats including the three listed above. Real Player is not generally used to broadcast, but many people utilize the extensive program to view content on their computers.

How to deliver the video?

- The two common transfer methods are progressive and streaming. Progressive is when the media file is actually downloaded or cached to the end users computer. This allows for repeated playback without burning your bandwidth, but it leaves the media very unsecured. Streaming media converts the recorded medium into a live stream and transmits it to the end user. Without an encoder or screen capture* software it is very difficult for the average user to record your video.

*Screen capture software is not generally a threat to content theft as the refresh rate and frame rate are not sufficient to create a quality recording.
