It depends on your abilities and your school. If you're not that academic then you may do only 3 A levels. At some schools, some clever people are allowed to do 5 A levels. But for the average Joe doing 5 A levels would be a lot of work and spreading yourself thinly might affect your grades. Normally people do 4 AS levels and then from these, they do 3 to A2. They might also do an A level in general studies but this isn't valued by universities :)
