To answer “What is your strength?”, pick 2–3 strengths that match the job, back each one with a short real example, and keep your answer under a minute. The interviewer wants proof, not just a word like “hardworking.”
Step 1: Read the job description
Note the top 3–4 skills the role needs.
Choose strengths that match them. For an HR role, that could be communication, listening or problem-solving.
Step 2: Use this simple formula
Strength + Example + Result
Strength: Name it clearly.
Example: Share a short moment from college, an internship or a job.
Result: Say what changed because of it.
Sample answer (fresher, HR role)
“My biggest strength is communication. In my final year, I led a team of five for a college project, and two members disagreed on the plan. I listened to both sides, found a middle path and kept the group on track. We finished two days early and got good marks. I enjoy helping people understand each other, which is why I’m drawn to HR.”
Sample answer (experienced candidate)
“My strength is problem-solving. At my last company, our hiring time was too slow because resumes were screened by hand. I suggested a simple tracking sheet and shortlisting criteria. Our time-to-hire dropped by about a week.”
Strengths that work well in most interviews
Communication
Teamwork
Time management
Adaptability
Attention to detail
Willingness to learn
Leadership
Problem-solving
Do’s
Match the strength to the job.
Use one real example for each strength.
Keep your tone confident, not boastful.
Practice aloud before the interview.
Don’ts
Don’t give a long list of 8–10 strengths.
Don’t use claims without proof, like “I’m a perfectionist.”
Don’t pick a strength the job doesn’t need.
Don’t memorise a script word for word. It sounds fake.
Quick tip: If the interviewer follows up with “Tell me more,” be ready with one more detail from the same example. Having two or three prepared stories is enough for most interviews.
