In FIBA basketball, if a game ends in a tie at the end of regulation time, the game proceeds to overtime periods. Each overtime period lasts for 5 minutes, and the game continues until a winner is determined. Teams do not switch sides between overtime periods, and there are no additional timeouts granted specifically for overtime. If the score remains tied at the end of an overtime period, additional overtime periods are played until a winner is decided.

Three 20 minute periods. If a regulary season game is tied after three periods, this is followed by a 5 minute sudden death overtime and if necessary a shootout. A playoff game has unlimited sudden death overtime, divided into 20 minute periods.
There are four 15 minute periods in arena football. They also play an overtime period if needed.
Overtime is used when there is a tied game at the end of the third period. The amount of time in that overtime is determined by the referee. If a team scores during that overtime, the game is over and they have won. If the game remains a tie, overtime periods are added unless otherwise stated by the referee that there will be a shootout.
