Endocrinologists must have a strong desire to serve patients, have good bedside manner, self-motivation, emotional stability, compassion, and determination. Endocrinologists must have excellent communication skills so are able to interact with a variety of patients and other medical personnel clearly and with ease. Also they must be able to work long hours under stress and pressure and make quick decisions in any emergency situations.

They need to know how to diagnose and treat a variety of hormone conditions. Many endocrinologists have sub-specialized in specific areas such as paediatric, adult, and reproductive endocrinology.

They must also be graduates of residency programs accredited by ACGME, Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), Graduates of colleges of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who meet one of the following qualifications: Have received a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates prior to appointment, or, Have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a US licensing jurisdiction in which they are training.Graduates of medical schools outside the United States who have completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school.
