After his father died for a brief time he helped manage the family plantation. He, then, joined the military and by 1801 had made the rank of Captain. President Jefferson chose him as the leader of an expedition through the Louisiana Purchase. He became co-leader of the expedition after William Clark joined. A few years later he wrote a book on the trip and would give speeches about what he and Clark saw and found.
