Col. Paul Warfield Tibbets Jr. piloted the B-29 known as the Enola Gay (named for Paul Tibbets mother) for the bombing of Hiroshima. The the 509th Composite Group had 15 B-29s in it, but only seven Boeing B-29s would take part, including the primary, a standby, a photo plane, one with scientific instruments to measure the blast, and three others that would scout ahead.
Most of the Crew of the Enola Gay were picked by Tibbets from his old B-17 crew.

∙ 13y agoOn August 6, 1945, at 8:15 AM local time, a B-29 plane, the "Enola Gay" was piloted by Colonel Paul W. Tibbets, dropped a uranium atomic bomb, code named "Little Boy" on Hiroshima, Japan.
On August 9, 1945, at 11:02 AM local time, another B-29, "Bockscar" was piloted by Colonel Charles W. Sweeney, when it dropped a plutonium atomic bomb, code named "Fat Man" on Nagasaki, Japan.
