Jacksonville, NC is known for being a military town, but the close proximity to the beach and several ’hidden’ gems make it one of the places that North Carolina natives visit quite often. Jacksonville is home to the Marine base Camp Lejeune, but it’s also a coastal town, only minutes from the Atlantic Ocean.

One of the places only a few minutes from Jacksonville is Snead’s Ferry, a tiny waterfront village that is home to Dr. RootBeer’s Hall of Foam, a place that is throwback to a time when diners picked one thing to do and did it really well. For Dr. RootBeer, they make, well, Root Beer. But even though people come from long distances for the beverages, it was the Pot Roast Burger that put them on the map. One bite and you’ll wonder how this place could possibly stay a secret for long.

Of course, there’s the beach, boating and other ocean activities, but visitors also can enjoy horseback riding at Equine Country USA and visit the nearby Sea Turtle rescue at nearby Topsail Beach.
