Can I be fired for nonspecific unsubstantiated hearsay?

If you are living in an at-will employment state, you can fire an employee for any reason, or for no reason, at any time. If you are not in an at-will employment state, the best thing to do is counsel the employee, document it, and let them know that if the behavior continues their employment with you will be teminated (they'll be fired).

In the United States, a worker can be fired for any reason that does not violate state or federal law. Examples of illegal reasons in include discrimination (race, sex, national origin, etc.) and retaliation (for Union support or for whistleblowing, etc.).

Collective bargaining agreements (Union contracts) typically contain a "Just Cause" clause, which states that an employee can only be disciplined or terminated for just cause. If a union worker is improperly discharged, the worker grieves it with the Union and the Union decides whether to arbitrate the matter before an arbitrator who has the authority to order the employer to reinstate the employee.

Some companies have rules concerning spreading the rumors and to what extent the damages will it cost. the company has the right to terminate such contract.

If you are under at will employment which most everybody is, unless you have a contract. You can be fired for any reason and they don't even have to tell you.
