I am not sure where you are located however, in Canada there is a section in the Criminal Code (s.494) that allows any citizen to arrest without warrant, any person they FIND COMMITTING an indictable offence. For purposes of arrest a Hybrid or Duel offence is considered indictable. I believe the US has a similar citizen's arrest law.

Regardless of being a P.I. or not the investigator is still a citizen and this would apply to him or her.

What rights or privileges does a private investigator have as opposed to a civilian I have read that they have no authority but why is it that in shows like Law and Order Elliot can arrest a suspect?

Citizens arrest. Elliott I would assume is a detective hired by the county or city.Citizens and PI's both have the citizens arrest. Private Investigators are hired by a company or lawyer or individual. Elliott is hired by the city which holds a higher power.Another View: The character (Elliot Stabler) is NOT a private investigator. He can make arrests because his character (portrayed by Christopher Meloni) is an NYPD detective. See below link:

Can private investigators speed up an investigation more than the police department?

A private investigator is more likely to speed up an investigation than a police department when it comes to a case. The private investigator will hand over the information to the police department so that an arrest can be made in the case of a crime. An investigative officer will enforce the case.

Do you use math with the private investigator?

yes you do need to know math to be a private investigator. cause being a private investigator you have to have the skills of computers and a ton of things.Added later: You need to be able to calculate the bills to your clients if you don't have someone to do it for you.But aside from that, if you are a P.I. working in forensics, you need maths and science (they go together).
