Can an illegal immigrant get a license in the US?

My girlfriend did that in Texas, all she did was show them her student ID and tourist visa. She did apply for the driver's license when she was illegal. You need two forms of idenfication and that is it

If she had a valid visa, then that makes her legal. How is she illegal ?

Just FYI if she had a student ID, she has a Student Visa, and that's stamped on her passport.

I first got mine while I was here (the US) illegally. That was in 1991 in California. Back then it was pretty easy, you only needed a birth certificate of your home country and I think that was it, other than pass the written and driving test. I am legally here now because I married a "gringa."

Well my boyfriend (soon to be husband) got his drivers License in Michigan he only had to take the writen test and then in a month he took the driver's test. They even let him take someone to translate for him he showed them his passport from Mexico .

In the state of Tennessee all you need is a birth certificate, a translated copy, and 2 bills in the persons name to verify residency (ex. utility, phone, rent, etc.). They have to pass a vision, written and driving test. Its fairly simple if they study the driving handbook.

answer you can have a valid visa, but if you overstay the length of time allowed for a visitor , that makes you illegal whether u have a visa or not. the only difference being that you did enter the country legally to start with

Years ago, it was fairly easy to get a driver's license but currently as of 2009, multiple DMV are NOT issueing driver's licenses, or state ids of any kind to an immigrant who enter illegally or overstayed an expired visa. It doesn't even matter if you have Social sercurity card in hand, you MUST have that proof of an valid visa, or green card.

I'm not entirely sure how this works, but apparently there are some states in which this is easier than others (assuming you are in the US). I know many, many illegal immigrants who have North Carolina driver's licenses. For whatever reason, they can give an address in North Carolina, take the test at the DMV and get a license. You can obtain plates and registration the same way. I also know someone who is planning to do this in Michigan. Hope this helps!

You can no longer do this in Michigan.my girlfirend has been trying to get a DL for months she recently went to Michigan after my telling her not to .I called to have them not issue her a DL and they told me that the laws there have changed .YOU CAN NOT GET A LICENSE YOU MUST SHOW GREEN CARD OR A VALID VISA .DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT TRYING THIS IN New Jersey ITS A ONE WAY TICKET TO JAIL.

An illegal immigrant can get a drivers license in certain states. The states that allow immigrants to get a drivers license regardless of their status are California, Nevada, Washington, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Illinois, Maryland, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico also do not consider Immigration status when issuing drivers licenses.

Not immediately. The legal husband/wife will first have to file a petition for the illegal immigrant to start the process of becoming a citizen.

Once the illegal immigrant goes through the process and becomes a citizen, they can apply for a license.

There are a few state exceptions that allow illegal immigrants to apply for a license.

You can't as you stated you are here illegally and under new federal guidelines for drivers licenses you wont have the proper documents required to obtain one.
