If your car gets inspected your license will be taken away.
Only if you can stand the noise... and the stink... and the noxious and potentially deadly fumes. I wouldn't do it.
They are in the exhaust pipe system, There are none after the muffler.
Yes you can but it will be a loud car
Your muffler is probably loose. Corrosion is common in exhaust systems and parts need to be replaced from time to time.
You drive a car without a muffler, it is not vital to the car's system. HOWEVER without the muffler the car is vastly louder, in some states causing you to receive a ticket
You more than likely have a hole in the muffler. You cannot repair a muffler, you can only replace it. Have your exhaust inspected and repaired ASAP. It is very dangerous to drive a car with a defective exhaust system. Carbon Monoxide can enter the passenger compartment and cause you to pass out and have an accident. I know from personal experience. This very thing happened to me in 1965. I still carry the scars from that accident.
If ONLY the muffler is missing from the rear of the car, and the rest of the exhaust system is intact, then the only damage will be to your hearing, and your wallet in the form of a ticket for defective equipment if you drive it on the street like that. However, I would NOT recommend running it for extended periods like that, as the engine is designed to run with a certain amount of backpressure, and with the muffler gone you are de-tuning your exhaust system and lowering performance. It's not like the old days where running open headers gave your car a power boost. Also you could be getting exhaust in the car itself as the pipe is open before the exhaust exits out from under the car.
Check the engine and transmission mounts along with the exhaust hangers.
You legally you need the entire exhaust system including a Catalytic converter that complies with Emissions laws of the state that you live in unless your car is 25 years or older. After 25 years you no longer need to have your emissions tested. So at that point you could basically drive around with no exhaust unless your causing noise complaints.
Take off your exhaust pipe and muffler. It is against the law to drive a vehicle on public roads without a proper exhaust system. or you could take of the big round exaust filter and replace it with a peice of pipe or a hot dog exaust to make it a deeper sound.
Exhaust gasses drive the shaft as it passes the wheel on the way out of the exhaust system
I have the same problem in my 2000 grand am! Have had it in the shop three times and they can not find the problem either. Exhaust system is tight, replced manifold gasket, still fumes. seems to be worse when cold is cold, after stopping from a drive, can smell on drivers side under the hood??? Help!
