I was wondering the same question. I just called the SC DOR for my location which is in Columbia, SC. You do not have to file your 1099 copies with the State of South Carolina as long as there was NO state tax with held.

Do you file 1096 with the state of nc?

No, you do not file Form 1096 with the state of North Carolina. Form 1096 is a summary form used to transmit information returns (like 1099s) to the IRS. However, you may have state-specific reporting requirements for income or payments made within North Carolina, which would be separate from the federal filing. Always check with the North Carolina Department of Revenue for any state-specific forms that may be required.
