Toddlers should take one to two naps a day, one late morning and one before 4 pm. Toddlers are busy learners. Their brains at that age absorb everything. Without nap times, toddlers are more apt to become irritable and cranky. They get tired but don't stop playing. With the structure parents give, toddlers can learn to rest even if they do not sleep. Nap time should be a quiet time, without playing -- except in bed, perhaps with one stuffed animal. With naps, children act calmer because they are rested and recharged. Note also, many pre-school programs include naptime, so it is wise to match your home schedule with naps around the same times the pre-school uses, typically 11am and 3pm.

Do 5 and 7 year olds still need a nap?

Depends on the child and on the day- my daughter is 7 and only needs a nap when she didn't get enough sleep the night before or had a long morning full of activity. She did still take naps 1/2 way through the year of her being 5 years old, but slowly phased them out, showing me she could be good without one.
