In our work with various diverse populations in Michigan people want to be included in a number of different ways:
-In cities and communities people want the leaders of their community to be representative of the population. For example, if a community has a 10% Asian population, it would be ideal to have 1 Asian person on a 10 person city council.
- While many forms of discrimination have been outlawed, some people still practice it informally. Those that are discriminated against want this to stop.
- Some cultures still suffer due to a history of "institutional" or "structural" racism - meaning that at one time there were laws that gave preferences to one cultural group over another. This was the case with housing laws in metropolitan areas throughout the United States from the 1930s through 1960s. This kept some people of color or culture, including African Americans, Latinos, and Jews, from buying houses in some communities, while Anglo-Americans could purchase wherever they pleased. This legacy took wealth away from African Americans and others by limiting their home ownership to poorer areas, while it gave wealth to Anglo-Americans by giving them the freedom to purchase wherever they wished.
