How did Jack The Ripper pick his targets?

Victim selection can be difficult to determine if the killer is never caught. But when looking a the photos taken of his victims it is clear that they are similar in appearance and age. There is the theory that he hated his mother and was in fact killing his own mother over and over. But over a century after the fact it is just a theory. As with Ted Bundy, who prefered college aged brunettes, most of the Ripper's victims were either short and overweight or underweight. It is possible he was unaware that his victims resembled each other.

With few exceptions Jack The Ripper's victims were middle-aged, homeless, poverty-stricken and alcoholic prostitutes that were either overweight or underweight. The exception being Mary Jane Kelly. Although no known photos of her exists, by descriptions from people that knew her, she had a fine shape and a pretty face. She was much younger than the other victims, being in her mid 20's. The Ripper deviated from his norm by killing Kelly inside, unlike the other victims that were killed outside, either on dark streets, alleys or darkened doorways. Most of the Ripper's victims were similar looking, a common behaviour for serial killers. The majority of Ted Bundy's victims were college-aged young women with dark hair usually parted in the middle. They, like the Ripper's victims, resembled each other in physical appearance.
