Starting in 1947, HUAC held a series of hearings involving the film industry. They feared that Communists had infiltrated Hollywood and were using the films to distribute secret Propaganda messages in them. A number of writers, directors, actors, and others were blacklisted when they were accused of being Communists. They lost their jobs and were unable to find work until the '60s when the Blacklist was lifted.
