In August 2010, the US received intelligence that Osama bin Laden was in hiding in a compound in Pakistan. They used information from couriers who traveled to and from the compound to determine the exact location.

On May 1, 2011 President Obama announced that Osama bin Laden was killed by US troops on the ground in a 40-minute firefight. He was killed by the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) and four men, including Osama, died in the attack. No American was wounded or killed.

Osama was shot at least once in the head. The US has custody of his body. President Obama ordered the attack after receiving intelligence of bin Laden's location in a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The US first received this intelligence in August 2010. Bin Laden was the mastermind of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and has been in hiding for nearly a decade.
