Pirates are usually driven to acquire riches by robbing others. In the past, unskilled sailors would join pirate crews because there was little well-paying employment. In modern times, conditions of poverty offer incentives to become lawless gangs, either on land, or at sea as pirates.

Before becoming a captain, James Hook worked for the notorious pirate Blackbeard. He served as a quartermaster under Blackbeard, gaining experience and reputation in the pirate community. After Blackbeard's demise, Hook eventually took command of his own ship, leading him to become the infamous Captain Hook known from J.M. Barrie's "Peter Pan."

The English pirate Edward Teach, commonly known as Blackbeard the Pirate, was the Captain of the pirate vessel Queen Anne's Revenge. The ship was originally a British frigate named the Concord, and ran as a slave ship. She was captured by pirate Captain Benjamin Hornigold, and given to Blackbeard, who at the time was one of his men.Blackbeard ran the ship aground in Beaufort Inlet, Carteret County, North Carolina, in November 1996. The shipwreck's artifacts continue to be recovered to this day.

Whoever owns the ship gets to either pick the captain or be the captain. After that, whoever stays alive longest can be captain. There really weren't all that many rules governing pirates -- that was kind of the point of being a pirate.
