They have access to databases of stolen guns and can check this for you and find the rightful owner.

Well, it depends. In the U.S. most states to not require registration and there is no federal registration, so the answer is, if you are in the U.S. it probably isn't registered. There are, however, a few states that do require registration, but if you live in one of those states, you still probably can't access the database. So, in general, the answer is, you can't.
