After hearing the entire case they meet in secret session, discuss the case they just heard, and vote among themselves as to the defendant's guilt or innocence. Depedning on the type of case and the prevailing state laws, some cases must be decided by unanimous verdict, other cases only by a simple majority.

The jury members discuss the case together in private and then all vote on guilt or innocence. If they do not all agree they have to discuss some more and while a judge may take a majority verdict (where there is say just one dissenting vote) if the jury simply can not agree there may be a need for a retrial.

Clarification: At the conclusion of the trial, after both sides have "rested" their case, the presiding judge will instruct the jury on all facets of the law the defendant was charged with violating. The jury will then 'retire' to the Jury Room which will be 'guarded' by a Bailiff to prevent intrusion on their deliberations. They will elect a foreperson from among them and begin deliberations where they will express their opinions and discuss the case they just heard. When it appears that they have reached agreement on a verdict they will take a vote among themselves and if all (or the minimum required number) are in agreement they notify the court that they have reached a decision. When they are again seated in the courtroom the jury foreperson will deliver the verdict to the court and, depending on the custom of the courts in that particular state either the Judge, the Clerk of Court, or the Foreperson themself will read the verdict. After the verdict is read, the attorney for the losing side will customarily ask for a poll of the jury and each jury member will be asked in turn if that was, in fact, their verdict. Depending on the type of case that was heard, the jury may then either be dismissed by the judge, or they may continue to serve as part of the sentencing phase of the case. Once the jury is dismissed by the judge they have no further responsibility to the court.

In the US, in a criminal trial, the defendant is declared guilty or not guilty by a jury of the defendant's peers. Most juries consist of twelve people. To reach a guilty verdict, the jury confers at the end of a trial. Within a reasonable amount of time, all twelve jurors must reach a unanimous decision in order to convict a defendant.
