How does someone know they are being sued?

if you have been served it should say who is suing you the plaintiff, who is the person or corporation suing. you can also try case net to see what is listed there. if it's on the court docket it should be there.

well when a man and a woman are in love and they decide they want to be sued, they send a letter to jesus asking for a law suit. jesus then evaluates the morality of the man and woman , and if he thinks they are ready he dispatches a stork to their house. the stork drops a baby down the chimney, and the baby tells the parents that they are being sued

You should have received a summons and with that summons is a copy of the plaint. Look at the line marked "Plaintiff", that is the person suing you. You're the defendant, as you must defend yourself against the case (though, in a law, the plaintiff bares the burden of the evidence in both civil & criminal trials, so a "defendant" is a misnomer).
