In my experience as a legal nurse consultant, the annual salary varies greatly depending on the type of work performed. For example in California, a LNC working in-house for a law firm can make $60,000-$90,000 per year plus benefits. Independent LNCs working from home may make more on an hourly basis ($50-$125 per hour depending on experience) but have the overhead costs of managing their own paid time off, medical insurance, retirement, office supplies and other home office-related overhead (electricity, internet, phones, etc.). There is also the added overhead cost of marketing, invoicing and other administrative duties that are not billable to a client. An LNC who works as a testifying nurse expert will likely charge at least $150 per hour, and even more if they are very experienced or are in high demand. That all said, an experienced LNC with a good marketing skills and a solid client base can easily make a six-figure salary.
