Is a Mexico marriage valid in the US?

Both the United States and Mexico recognize marriages performed in other jurisdictions as long as the marriage was legal in the jurisdiction where it was performed. Both countries, however, reserve the right to reject a marriage which is "against public policy" (e.g., incestuous or polygamous marriages). As for same-sex marriages, they are recognized by Mexico and all Mexican states, but not by the federal government in the United States and not by most U.S. states.

In general, a marriage is recognized by the federal government and by U.S. state governments if the marriage was considered legal in the jurisdiction in which it was performed (for example, Mexico), unless the marriage is against public policy (i.e., incestuous, polygamous, etc.).

One important exception is same-sex marriage, which is currently not recognized by the U.S. federal government and by many state governments. States that do recognize same-sex marriages, however, will also recognize a same-sex marriage performed in Mexico City (the only jurisdiction in Mexico that permits same-sex marriages to be performed, although such marriages are recognized as legal in all of Mexico).
