Yes, there were pirates off the coast of Maine, and there still are some. They will probably be around for a long time to come. At least until greed and thievery aren't around any longer. Modern pirates generally use speed boats or former coast guard vessels, nowadays. One of the more infamous pirates in Maine history was Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard. Blackbeard and his crew of pirates terrorized sailors on the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea from 1716 through 1718. Blackbeard's treasure is believed to have been buried on the Isle of Shoals off Maine's coast. A few other infamous pirates raiding off the coast of Maine include Captain William Kidd, William Fly, Rachel Wall, Dixie Bull, and Ned Low.
