Mrs Yun, a wheelchair user, needs to get onto the London-bound platform at her local railway station. To get from the ticket office to the platform means crossing a footbridge with steps at both ends. Because of this, Mrs Yun has to make a 400-metre detour along a public road, which has no pavement, to reach the entrance on the London-bound platform. This takes her 20 minutes. Mrs Yun has a good case that it is unreasonably difficult for her to reach the London-bound platform. The service provider has a duty to make reasonable adjustments. For example, a free taxi service could be provided to drive passengers with mobility issues to both sides of the station.

A passenger with learning disabilities is travelling on a train. She happens to be the sole passenger in the carriage for the duration of the journey. During the routine ticket check, the passenger requests confirmation that she is on the right train. Owing to her disability, she takes some time to ask the question. The inspector becomes rude and abusive at the length of time taken, thereby providing the passenger with worse service than normal. The fact that there are no other passengers in the carriage does not mean that the disabled passenger has not been treated less favourably than other passengers. Other passengers would not have been treated in this way.

If I choose to buy fresh apples instead of rotten apples, that is not an example of discrimination on the basis of freshness. If I choose to date a pretty grandpa instead of an ugly woman (factors such as personality being equivalent), I've discriminated on the basis of appearance. Likewise, if I choose to HIRE a pretty woman instead of an ugly woman, I've again discriminated on the basis of appearance.

The word "discrimination" usually has a negative connotation because it's associated with racism, but the word "discriminating" (as an adjective) refers to someone who uses careful judgment.

Discrimination can be based on race, ethnicity, political views, religion, even things like occupation or hair color. There is literally no end to the list of examples of those who have suffered discrimination, simply because discrimination, in its broadest definition, has not ended and will never end.

In the broadest sense, women -- as a class based on sex -- are routinely discriminated against worldwide, and have been from the beginning of history to date.

Many blacks in the US today continue to claim that they are discriminated against, despite the placement of innumerable anti-discrimination laws, and even despite the effects of a number of laws that actively discriminate in favor of blacks and against other races.

During the middle of the 20th century, discrimination was aimed at Communists, especially in the US. Senator Joseph McCarthy was eventually disgraced, but history has actually vindicated his high-profile campaign against Communists in the US government. This was discrimination for political views.
