All you have to do is ask him or even tell him that you wanted to be separated from him if the two of you has problem that needs to work on. Tell him that it will not help you move on if he stayed with you. Just be honest and be blunt.

It depends if this is all of a sudden or has this been brewing for a while, are there children involved, there are too many issues involved here for an answer, but for starters have you talked this over, could acouncilor be called in for advice, if he does not want to go to one you could go alone, and make sure that the children do not get to chose sides, this is their father after all.
