What career options do I have with being a felon?

1) Is this your only offense? Depending on the nature of the felony and its jurisdiction, you may file for expungement. This is not a guarantee though and one must be prepared that if rejected, the felony could haunt you permanenetly.

2) Be upfront about your felony. Don't waste a prospective employer's time putting you through the motions, only to have your background check come back with an issue. Ask questions.

3) Find a placement program. Many local work centers already know what local organizations employ felons. Network with other felons. What was their experience after being convicted? Where do they work?

4) I guess the best advice I can give is to think... bigger. Work for yourself. Start your own business. Whatever it is. That's one way to avoid having your criminal record investigated. (Unless the business you choose requires it at some point.)

Starting at the bottom is the first thing. Many doors may be closed. Be realistic, theft charge, avoid money handling. Working for yourself is a good goal if your charges are severe. Volunteering will help over the long term to show a better character and references.

I would find other felons you know that have made good and are working hard. Not only will they give you good advice, but they may work for a company that feels ex cons have paid their price and give you a chance.
