Hamilton served in the Continental Army as an aide to General Washington. After the war, he was appointed to Washington's cabinet as Secretary of the Treasury. He advocated the federal assumption of the state debts, pushing for a stronger federal government. Hamilton set the foundation for the financial system in this country.

Washington then appointed Hamilton to run the Army. He was instrumental in modifying and standardizing the military. Hamilton stayed active in politics especially the Federalist party. It is likely he would have gone on to greater things, perhaps even President, had he not been shot by the traitor Aaron Burr.
