Slavery is the ownership or physical control of people by other people, the elimination of their free will and personal choice. Those forced, sold, or born into slavery may be compelled to toil for others and receive no compensation or fair treatment. Historically, slaves were those captured in lands subjugated by conquest and forced to work for the conquerors. In African and Native American tribes, members of rival warring tribes were enslaved, and sometimes sold. Most cultures until the 19th century recognized the children of slaves as property of their slaveowners.

In the wake of the political and philosophical changes of the 18th and 19th century, slavery began to be viewed by Europeans as inherently incompatible with human rights and freedom. Between 1723 and 1866, slaves in Russia were declared free serfs. Slavery was abolished by France in 1814, by Britain in 1833, and by the United States during the Civil War in 1863.

Slavery persists into the 21st century in regions such as Sudan in Africa, and as "bonded labor" in India, Brazil, and Mauritania. This is apart from "slave-like" conditions for many immigrant workers and agricultural workers.
