This is not as unusual as you might imagine. Request a hearing and plead your case. You may not be able to 'beat' the ticket entirely but you might well be able to get the enhanced charges removed by the hearing officer. CAUTION: However, as you might expect - this is a common excuse and some hearing officers are more 'open' to it than others - go with as convincing a story as possible.
