Canada abolished the death penalty for everything but certain forms of treason and national defense issues in 1976. These last exceptions were removed in 1998, and Canada now has no 'capital' crimes.

After DNA evidence became available, it showed that many people facing death were actually innocent. For years the government had been executing innocent people. As a result, a number of places ended capital punishment.
