American's freedom of speech is guaranteed by the first amendment. We are allowed to say anything we want to, as long as we don't create a dangerous situation.

For example, we are allowed to say, "I disagree with what the government is doing." It is important that we have this right because a free marketplace of ideas is important for any democracy.

But, our freedom of speech is limited. We are not allowed to shout, "FIRE" in a crowded movie theatre, because this would cause people to panic. People would run away and people could get very hurt in the stampede.
