Extortion (aka blackmail) is a form of intimidation used to gain a benefit of some sort. It could be money or the execution of an act or anything that the perpetrator wants.

In Canada, section 346(1) of the Criminal Code describes extortion as: "without reasonable justification or excuse and with intent to obtain anything, by threats, accusations, menaces or violence induces or attempts to induce any person, whether or not he is the person threatened, accused or menaced or to whom violence is shown, to do anything or cause anything to be done"

Note, threatening to sue someone in order to receive a payment is not considered extortion.

If you feel you're being blackmailed, and you're not sure what to do, speaking with a lawyer would give you an opportunity to understand your situation confidentially due to the attorney-client privilege.
