A Privateer is a Sailor who is commishened by the king or a govorner with a letter of mark that makes it leagal to attack and steal the goods of ships of other nations while on the high seas. Especially during times of war. For example a governor in Jamaica would give a privatter a letter of mark making it legal for the British sailors to attack the Spanish,French,Dutch and any other nations ships besides Brittish ships. They're still called pirates. Sure there are the Somali Pirates but those are just where the pirates are from. They don't only occur in Somalia, Nigeria, Taiwan, China anywhere there is a poor country with a coastline you will find pirates. however modern pirates come armed not with cutlasses but with rocket launchers and AK74's, and they're not after the ship or cargo, they're after the crew.
