They basically are stuff the government deals with i.e. the FBI, IRS or DEA.

Whereas State crimes are:

• Domestic violence
• Burglary
• Aggravated assault
• Drug trafficking
• Weapons offenses

• Felonies
• Resisting with violence
• Grand theft
• False imprisonment
• Kidnapping
• Fraud offenses
• Sexual battery
• Stalking/ aggravated stalking

They all vary depending on that states jurisdiction and their own laws, but most crimes fall under state crimes anway.

The main difference is, state police have jurisdiction within the state where they work, federal officers have jurisdiction anywhere in the U.S. Another difference is, in my state, state police officers mostly are responsible for "enforcing federal and state laws relating to traffic, investigating accidents, and criminal interdiction on roads and highways," and federal officer investigate federal crimes, such as bank robbery.

So. You have outfits like the FBI and DEA whose general jurisdiction might be nation wide. At the same time you have the Department of Veterans Affairs Police who's jurisdiction is only the grounds of the various VA Hospitals. Federal and state criminal law differs because of how they are regulated. Federal criminal laws must be followed uniformly by all 50 states. State criminal laws can be made by individual states. What may be a state law in one state, may not be the same in another.
