One of the Enforcement Acts, specifically the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871, was designed to combat the violent actions of the Ku Klux Klan and other white supremacist groups in the Southern United States during Reconstruction. It allowed federal authorities to intervene in cases where state authorities failed to protect citizens' rights, particularly the rights of African Americans. The Act empowered the president to use military force to suppress the Klan's activities and made it a federal crime to conspire to deny individuals their civil rights. This legislation aimed to uphold the protections granted by the 14th and 15th Amendments.
