If you recorded it for the purposes of selling the recording--even a small batch of copies--you would be infringing on copyright. Many people (such as on YouTube) do "covers" of a song, which seems to be accepted, or at least ignored or forgiven by most copyright holders. However, I'm sure you'd receive a cease and desist letter if (1) you posted the original artist's work; (b) posted it as your own; or (c) if you made substantial money from your posting.

Artists sort of expect that people sing in their cars, mimic at Karaoke bars, 'perform' at weddings/parties for family, and have persons or groups perform 'covers' of the artist's work. If a big venue, ask. If in doubt, contact the label for permission.
