The Framers of the US Constitution had studied the political philosophy of John Locke and other Enlightenment theorists. They also were all too familiar with the British monarch form of government and wanted to avoid a situation where individuals could gain too much power. They also had taken notice of the ancient Roman Republic, and although that system was not what they wanted, they did believe that some forms of that government were useful for their "modern day" purposes. For example, the ancient Roman republic had powers within it divided among different groups of people.
