Polyester was first patented in the United Kingdom by chemist John Rex Whinfield and his colleague James Tennant Dickson in 1941. They developed the material as a synthetic fiber, which was later marketed as "Terylene." This innovation laid the groundwork for the widespread use of polyester in textiles and various applications in the following decades.
