The Chinese Exclusion Act was passed by Congress in 1872 which suspended the Immigration of "Chinese laborers" for 10 years. President Arthur signed the bill in May. It did not exclude merchants and their families. Congress eventually passed 14 more anti-Chinese immigration Acts which would bar most all Chinese from immigrating to the US. All the 15 laws were repealed in 1943. Wikipedia has an article dealing with Chines immigration.
