The President of the United States is advised on issues of science and technology by the director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). The office was established in May 11, 1976 by Congress. It has the mandate of advising the president on how developments in science and technology will affect the United States at home and abroad.

The current director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, often simply called the President's Science Adviser is Dr.John Holdren. He also serves as the co-chair of the President's Committee of Advisers on Science and Technology, which was established on September 30, 2001 by President George W. Bush. As co-chair of the National Science and Technology Council he also serves to help coordinate federal science and technology policy across Federal research and development areas.
