Early on Pol Pot, then still called Sar was greatly influenced by the French Communists Party while in France and joined a secret organization known as the Cercle Marxiste (Marxist Circle). This group had taken control of the Khmer Student's Association that he belonged to while in Paris. Though he would later break with Marxism in favor of forming the revolution from the rural peasant farmers, contending that they where the "true" working class proletarian, his major influence remained Marxist.
