Washington, DC outlawed the death penalty and has not executed anyone since the US Supreme Court lifted the moratorium on capital punishment in 1976. The federal government has only ordered three people executed from 1976-2009; all three received lethal injections.

The last person executed by hanging in the United States was Billy Bailey, who died in a Delaware prison in January 1996. Delaware no longer uses hanging as a vehicle for death.
