There is much to like about the First Amendment, since it guarantees Americans a number of important freedoms: Freedom of speech, freedom of the press (what we today call "the media"), freedom of worship (there is no one "official religion" in the United States, nor are we forced to believe a certain way), freedom of assembly (if we want to peacefully protest, or complain about government policies, we have the right to do so). While many of us take these rights for granted, there are numerous countries which do not have such guarantees.

Of course, the U.S. is certainly not perfect, and while the Bill of Rights is a wonderful document, it has not always been enforced: for example, in America's early days, some states had laws that only Christians were allowed to vote. But gradually, such laws were overturned. The fact that the First Amendment exists means the rights of the minority (whether religious minorities or political minorities) are protected, and persons who feel they have been discriminated against can turn to the courts (being able to petition the government for a "redress of grievances" is another right in the Bill of Rights).
