Why does society have rules?

If there were no rules think about it: Everyone doing anything and everything they want at the same time would ensue chaos thus rules are needed. Remember that without the rules of society, murderers, rapists, and republicans would do as they wish

I would also like to know this. I don't see how governments can impose laws and guidelines on "free" human beings. The only thing stopping us from breaking the laws is fear of reprisals ie. prison, fines etc.
We follow laws because if we don't we get punished. Which means everybody is oppressed and repressed regardless of your government. There is no such thing as freedom in modern society. SUBVERT>

Originally laws followed a set of rules known as "Corpus Delicti" - which means body of the crime; what this means is that you cannot have a crime where you cannot show three component parts, as: 1) Injury in fact, arson - a house burnt, larceny - property missing, homicide - a person deceased 2) The perpetrator of the crime 3) A 'law' either common or written prohibiting the act.
In most governments today they have done away with the history of the judicial system and invoked a new rule called "Malum Prohibita" meaning "a normally natural act only unlawful because a statute says it is so." The stated theory is that you can "prevent crime" by such laws. This is not true however, as current crime rates continue to climb unabated by all the 'good intentions' there are.
The third and most provoking reason for these prohibita laws is money. Los Angeles County has more courts than the entire nation of France, and the prison system is being privatized - a corporation housing prisoners for profit. Drug seizures alone made 6 Billion Dollars (Profit) in the last reported year, and 67% of everyone in jail (State and Federal - in the USA) is there for a non-violent drug offense. To exemplify this issue: 3 years ago a girl was killed a couple of blocks from my house by a murderer on parole from prison; the parole board stated they had to release him to make bed space for drug offenders that are required to be in prison longer than the murderer (by federal law).
Lastly, to make this point - the National Motorist Association reports that in 2006 local governments made $7.5 Billion Dollars from traffic tickets, while the US DOT reports that accidents per capita has not changed since 1967 (the first reported year). A:
The system of laws is a set of rules, by which a society agrees to abide, that allows them to function as a group. This is a fundamental principle of civilization.
The agreement to behave in a certain way allows us to do more, because we are not constantly having to defend ourselves or our property. Laws are a formalized version of this agreement, and are necessary because of the complexity of our society.

If you lived in complete isolation, laws would be unnecessary, because you would have no interaction with others. As soon as someone says "This is mine", they would have to defend it or rely on the other people agreeing that it is theirs by some sort of right. That right is effectively granted by law.

Quite simply, to handle disputes, errors, or poor judgment of a given person. In any society, altercations between citizens can break down a healthy structure, so the laws are in place to attempt to guarantee rights to each member. For example, if I want to murder someone, I would decide not to, because of the law ad it's consequences. There are those that do not care either way, and even those that enjoy the consequences, so the system isn't perfect.

Fair and non-discriminatory laws are the framework for a civilized society. They provide a remedy when someone takes unfair advantage of another person. They protect property. They allow a person to know the consequences of their behavior before they act. They allow the removal from society of those who are dangerous. They protect every person's freedom and rights under the law. Laws can be a deterrent for those who would violate the rights of others.

Laws are necessary so people can be punished when they commit certain acts. Laws set the rules and boundaries for society, what is and is not allowed or tolerated. If we did not have laws, the society at large could not function due to differences in local customs. One school of thought holds that in the natural state only the strongest can benefit from their natural rights so people form a social contract ceding their natural rights to an authority (government) to protect them from abuse by the stronger individuals.

Rules, law, and government are needed so that people are treated fairly no matter what their income and race. These are also required to keep order and to build infrastructure in a community.
