James Madison was called "the father of the constitution" because he was the author of the basic plan of government that the Convention adopted. Not only that, but he kept careful notes at Convention which was not open to the public. These notes are by far the best record of the convention in existence. He also campaigned for its ratification and wrote the first 10 amendments known at the Bill of Rights.
