From after the first U. S. Census in 1790 until after the 13th Census in 1910, with the exception of the 6th Census in 1840, the number of House seats was increased when the reapportionments were done. The House seats were not reapportioned after the 1920 Census. On June 18, 1929, the Reapportionment Act of 1929 made the size of the House of Representatives constant at 435, the size it had been since March 4, 1913.

The only time the size of the House changes is when a new state is added to the Union, but at the time of the following reapportionment it goes back down to 435.
